Social media- tags, trends and in between.

Social media- tags, trends and in between.

Ana Asif

It would not be incorrect to say that we live in a world highly influenced by tags and trends. Social media has, indeed, connected people in an unprecedented manner, on the other hand, it has simultaneously triggered a myriad of risks and problems in society. The growing negative effects of social media have outweighed its benefits. The desperate urge to be recognised online, the number of likes and follows, unsolicited opinions and unbridled criticism are a few of the many adverse effects of social media.

There is no doubt that social media has revolutionised the world of communication and facilitated the sharing of information. However, it is equally true that Social media has exacerbated many social problems. It has given birth to an era of controversies, mental health issues, emotional instability, communication gap in personal lives, and unrealistic goals and aspirations.

Nevertheless, it is never the lifeless tools that pose a significant threat to humanity, but their use and, to be exact, abuse. Forks and knives don't take people's lives. People hurt people and humanity dies at the hands of these very humans. The same goes for social media. Social media platforms have been designed to connect people around the globe, not to verbally attack one another on these platforms. Neither to demoralize, demean and defame people. Hence, the majority of issues associated with the usage of Social media are not technological but social ones.

Considering everything, It is necessary to educate people on the sensitivity of this issue. A change of attitude and a bit of sensibility can do wonders in this regard. We need to use the technology for the very purpose it was developed: to facilitate people. In a nutshell, if you are empowered enough and given the power to reach out to the world using a few clicks, use this power wisely and kindly.
